Good To Know
Who Needs to Wear Toric Contact Lenses?
Toric contact lenses are designed to correct your vision and astigmatism, this means they are a little more complex than regular lenses as they are correcting two prescriptions, one to correct your power and the other to correct the shape of the eye.
In non-astigmatic eyes, the corneas will be smooth and spherical, allowing light to enter the eyes evenly. In astigmatic eyes, however, the eye or eyes often have unevenly shaped corneas that warp how the light penetrates the retina. This is commonly referred to as a 'football' shaped eye - this is a very subtle shape difference and can not be seen by looking at your eye!
You will notice Toric contact lenses require additional information relating to the fit of the lens, the Axes and Cylinder powers help correct any astigmatism by allowing the focusing of powers on both the horizontal and vertical lines.
A Toric contact lens needs to remain stable in your eye and not rotate when you blink, so the manufacturers use different techniques to stabilise Toric contact lenses
- Chamfering - Creation of thin and thick zones
- Truncation - Removing a small part of the lower lens
- Ballasting - Making the lens a little thicker or heavier at the bottom
What Is WetLoc Technology?
WetLoc™ technology is a trademark of CooperVision and refers to a process they use to create a hydrophilic (water-loving) contact lens that provides optimum wettability.
WetLoc™ is a non-surface treatment that manipulates the structure of naturally hydrophobic (water-repelling) molecules found in silicone so that a contact lens containing silicone hydrogel can bind with water molecules making them adhere to the contact lens and by doing so make them hydrophilic.
WetLoc™also provides increased wettability throughout the day and increases wearing times and comfort.

‡ With higher oxygen permeability than hydrogel materials, silicone hydrogel contact lenses minimise or eliminate hypoxia-related signs and symptoms during lens wear.
* Warning: UV-absorbing contact lenses are not substitutes for protective UV-absorbing eyewear, such as UV-absorbing goggles or sunglasses, because they do not completely cover the eye and surrounding area. Patients should continue to use UV-absorbing eyewear as directed.
